Toddler Child Care Program18 Months to 3 years old
Our Toddler Program is designed for children 18 months to 3 years old and is geared towards individualized routines, including physical movement and motor skills, language and literacy development, and social and emotional learning. Toddlers can be potty trained in our program, but they must already be able to walk before entering the program.
We prepare our lesson plans on the individual needs of each toddler and incorporate group time activities. We provide the opportunity for children to benefit from the diversity in our school and the community. We also encourage our families to be involved and share their cultures.
At the Good Child Transitional Center, goals for the children include developing:
- A desire to learn and view learning as an ongoing, inclusive experience
- An appreciation and understanding of one’s own talents, skills and accomplishments
- A strong, healthy body
- An appreciation of family, friends, community and the differences among people

Our curriculum is based on the CT ELDS (Connecticut Early Learning & Developmental Standards) where we strive to meet their standards in many areas including:
- Experience and understand the cause and effect of different choices and actions.
- A comprehension of scheduled daily activities and following routines.
- Take on pretend roles and situations to better understand cognition and interaction.
Language and Literacy Development:
- Learn how to listen, hear, and discriminate the sounds of language.
- Demonstrate their knowledge of the alphabet.
- Learn to identify different groups of sounds such as among farm animals.
- Reading books together as a group such as “P. Bears New Year’s Eve Party: A Counting Book.”
- Experiencing outdoor play with other children.
- Group activities such as shaking the parachute with soft toys, and counting as each item comes off.
Gross and Fine Motor Skills:
- Develop gross motor skills by trying to balance an object while moving, playing “Duck, Duck, Goose!”, and “Chicken Balancing.”
- Develop fine motor skills by learning to use scissors, dressing themselves, building with foam blocks.
Social and Emotional Learning:
- Creating dramatic play.
- Learning the differences between winter clothes and summer clothes, and why they need to wear different clothes for different situations.
- Understand routines and transitions between activities and planned events.
- Learning to share and respecting the rights of other children.
- Introducing new musical instruments, and learning how each of them work.
- Experience and explore art by drawing pictures of animals and foods, creating “dripping fireworks”.
Math & Science:
- Learning how to think logically about a problem or situation.
- Counting back from 10 to 1 and other math activities.
- Learning how to measure with measuring cups, rulers and string.
- Understanding the idea of growing a plant by first planting a seed.
- Exploring the wonders of “Bubble” science.
The following is a sample of what our toddlers here experience each day:
6:45AM – 8:00AM – Arrival / Greet Parents and Students / Help with Goodbyes / Free play with childrens’ choice, blocks, coloring, puzzles, etc.
8:50 – Clean up and wash hands for breakfast.
9:00 – 9:20 – Breakfast Served
9:20 – 9:30 – Clean up and wash hands.
9:30 – 9:50 – Group Time
9:50 – 10:30 – Outside Playground (weather permitting)
9:50 – 10:40 – Activity Time: art projects, sensory play, manipulative & dramatic play
10:40 – 10:45 – Clean Up
10:45 – 11:00 – Great Room
11:00 – Change Diapers / Potty / Wash Hands
11:00 – 11:30 – Books, Music & Movement
11:25 – 11:30 – Clean Up & Wash Hands
11:30 – 12:00PM – Lunch
12:30 – 2:30 – Naptime
2:45 – 3:00 – Wake Up / Put Away Nap Items / Change Diapers / Potty / Wash Hands
3:00 – 3:30 – Snack is Served
3:30 – 4:00 – Great Room
4:15 – 5:00 Outside Time (weather permitting)
4:00 – 5:30 Free Play / Greet Parents / Help Children Get Ready to Go Home
